Background screening is no longer a formality at the end of a hiring process — a large share of recruiters search candidates before the first call, and a meaningful share have rejected someone based on what they found. The results are shaped by whatever ranks for your name, which is usually not content you created.
Run the audit the way a recruiter would
- Search your full name in a private window, then again in quotes, then with your city and employer.
- Repeat on Bing and DuckDuckGo — recruiters don't all use Google, and results differ significantly.
- Reverse-image search your profile photo to find where else your face appears.
- Search every username you've reused; forum and gaming handles frequently link back to a real name.
- Check the Images and News tabs, not just web results.
Triage what you find
- Damaging and removable (people-search profiles, old addresses, leaked documents) — submit opt-outs and de-index requests.
- Damaging and not removable (news coverage, court records) — you cannot delete it, so displace it with stronger positive results.
- Neutral clutter (namesakes) — differentiate yourself with a consistent professional profile and byline.
- Positive assets (portfolio, talks, publications) — strengthen and interlink so they outrank the rest.
Displacement beats deletion
Page one has about ten slots. Publishing and interlinking a small set of authoritative profiles — a personal site, a well-maintained LinkedIn, conference or publication pages — reliably pushes low-authority broker listings off it. Combine displacement with removals and page one becomes a résumé rather than a dossier.
Know your legal footing
If an employer uses a third-party background-check company, the FCRA gives you the right to notice, consent, a copy of the report, and a chance to dispute inaccuracies before an adverse decision is final. In the EU, the same data is subject to GDPR access and rectification rights.
MyTrace.fyi runs this entire audit automatically across search results, usernames, documents, and images, scores which findings actually hurt you, and gives each one a direct removal route.
